Tuesday, we visited the school where our program will be taking place. It is the scuola media in Broccostella (Frosinone) Italy. We are fortunate to have a first floor classroom with a "lavagna luminosa" or Smart/Promethean Board. The classroom is very simple - the "banchi" or student desks with chairs, a teacher desk and maps - of Italy and the region "state" of Lazio.
I met the preside or principal, a wonderful lady, very excited to have us here, who gave us books that her students made about the area we are in, for our students.
Another woman, who spoke English because she had lived in Canada, took us around to show us the computer lab, cafeteria and the adjoining elementary school. They also have ceramics and other arts classes for the students. They made some beautiful ceramic wall hangings (pictures at a later date) that I saw hanging in the preside's office.
I am really excited to start classes tomorrow, on Thursday, but it will be a short class, as we are going to the weekly "mercato" or open air market in the next town, Sora. Ever since my grandmother's time, there has been a mercato there on Thursdays, where merchants go to sell their wares. The streets of the town are closed to most traffic and the vendors come in "furgoncini" or vans, set up tables and umbrellas and a cash register. (These are mandatory today.)
